Phoenix and Gryffin, the pride of 3rd Kensington Sea Scouts! These sturdy gigs—traditional, sleek rowing boats—are built for teamwork, endurance, and adventure on the water. Whether cutting through calm waters or battling the elements, they challenge our crew to work in perfect unison, building strength, skill, and resilience.
They are 7 person rowing boats that our scouts spend the whole of winter to be able to stay on the water in cold while staying nice and dry. Gig Adventure is our main attraction with these boats where our scouts spend 24 hours on the Vaal Dam with all their equipment in the boat. Seamanship and Kontiki also feature these boats with a lot of fun and smiles.
Phoenix also boasts a sail, allowing the scouts to take to the winds.
Our Kayaks
3rd Kensington's Vuvubats and Hydrobats make adventure on the water easy. From simple kayaking on the water to the excitement of canoe polo, Scouts learn personal and team co-ordination!
Other Boats
3rd Kensington also boasts a range of other equally exciting vessels, from sail based river boats to the exciting wind-surfers there's no shortage of ways to explore the water!
Other paddling boats that we have include our white water boats. These are a variety of boats we use to take down rivers. A few years ago our troop did a 5 day trip down the Orange River. These boats includes Izaes and K1s which are one person boats. We also have a few K2s which are two person boats.
Our Boathouse
Rebuilt in the wake of a fire, 3rd Kensington's boathouse is our home away from home. Beyond a simple picturesque place to camp and learn, it offers the group a place to practice our seamanship and truly connect with the water.
